Blended Chocolate Zucchini Cottage Cheese Muffins
These Zucchini Chocolate Cottage Cheese Muffins kinda have no business being so good. With 2 cups of grated zucchini (!) blended into the batter and a cup of cottage cheese for staying power, these muffins are both feel-good *and* decadent. They’ve got soft, chocolatey, cake vibes that still totally work for breakfast—thanks to whole wheat flour, flax, and just the right amount of chocolate chips. Hearty, wholesome, and ready in under 30 minutes.

Chocolate cottage cheese muffins that truly aren’t weird….even if they have veggies in them.
If I’m being honest—these muffins were not supposed to happen. I was actually tweaking my beloved Chocolate Chip Carrot Cottage Cheese Muffins (you know, the ones you all keep coming back to) when I had a moment of “what if I swapped the carrots for zucchini… and added cocoa powder?” So I did. And let me tell you, the result was next-level good. I even surprised myself with this one.
Ken and my 13-year-old both declared these their new favorite muffins on the site—and considering they’ve taste-tested allllllll of my veggie-loaded muffin recipes (and there are over 40 of them!) that I’ve created, that’s saying a lot. They’re rich, chocolatey, and have that super satisfying texture from the blended cottage cheese and zucchini in the batter. Just the right amount of sweet, with a feel-good decadent vibe that somehow works for both breakfast and dessert. I wasn’t planning on developing a new muffin recipe that day, but here we are….and who doesn’t like a happy little accident (especially when chocolate is involved)?
Let’s make these together. Just you and me….

Blended Zucchini + Chocolate Cottage Cheese Muffins
Ingredients
- 2 cups (192 g) loosely packed grated zucchini, measure before squeezing out the moisture
- 2 large eggs
- ¼ cup (59.15 ml) avocado oil
- 1 cup (210 g) cottage cheese, either low fat or full fat. Fat free has too much added water.
- ½ cup (73.33 g) packed light brown sugar, or coconut sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ⅓ cup (40 g) ground flax
- 1 cup (120 g) whole wheat flour
- ⅓ cup (28.67 g) cocoa powder
- ⅓ cup (60 g) chocolate chips
Instructions
- Heat the oven to 375℉. Line 12 compartments of a standard muffin tin with paper liners or grease with oil spray.
- Place pre-measured shredded zucchini in the middle a paper towel or clean kitchen towel. Wrap it up and squeeze out excess moisture.
- Add the grated zucchini, eggs, cottage cheese, oil, brown sugar, and vanilla to a blender. Blend until all the ingredients are combined and very smooth. Zucchini should be completely pureed.
- Pour the contents of the blender into a medium mixing bowl. Add the baking powder, baking soda, and cinnamon to the bowl and whisk into the zucchini mixture.
- Add the ground flax, whole wheat flour, cocoa powder and chocolate chips to the bowl. Stir until the dry ingredients are just incorporated into the batter. Careful not to overmix!
- Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup or scoop to divide the batter into the 12 prepared muffin cups and top each one with a few more chocolate chips, if you’d like.
- Bake at 375℉ for 20-23 minutes, or until toothpick inserted into middle comes out clean.
- Allow muffins to cool completely then enjoy or store in an airtight container at room temperature for a day then refrigerate for 4 to 5 days. Muffins can be individually wrapped then frozen for up to 2 months.

These sound amazing and I will have to try them. But, my family only eats food for the nuts in it, and this recipe is screaming for walnuts. I will let you know, but I am pretty sure they will be a hit.
Oh heck yeah! That sounds amazing!
I forgot to come back and tell you they ARE amazing. Soft and fluffy with the crunch of walnuts is just wonderful. And, they aren’t too sweet, making them great with coffee. No guilt knowing they contain a good amount of protein and vegetables. Definitely a favorite. We used mini chocolate chips, otherwise followed the recipe exactly.
Aw thanks so much for coming back and sharing!!!
Can I use honey or maple syrup instead of sugar? Do you know how much?
I feel like they would be too wet with a liquid sweetener. If you did, you’d like need to add some more flour or flax (a couple tablespoons) to absorb the added moisture or reduce the cottage cheese by about 1/4 of a cup to balance out the moisture level. I haven’t tested this is a liquid sweetener yet, but this is where I would start!
Can I replace the egg with more flax etc.?
Hi Tammy! I haven’t tried these with flax eggs in place of chicken eggs, but I think they’d work! They may not rise quite as much as mine but should hold together okay. If you give it a go, please let us know how they turn out!
I’ve been excited for this recipe and it lived up to my excitement! So, so good. Picky toddler eating one now as well!
Oh yay, Meghan!! I’m so glad it was everything you were hoping for + the fact that your selective one is on board is total magic to my mama ears! Thanks so much for coming back and sharing 💚
Hi! Can I skip the flax?
Hi Shan! I wouldn’t skip it entirely since it will change the batter. I’d replace it with chia seeds or perhaps some extra flour. I haven’t tested their of those suggestions, but that is where I would start!
Hey! So excited to try these but I have a quick question. Is it a cup of WW flour or 1 1/4? The measurement doesn’t seem to match the grams listed.
Thanks!
Thanks for catching that! It is 1 cup or 120g. Fixed!
Do you think fresh milled hard white flour would work the same?
I haven’t tried but I think it would work!
I feel like there should be some salt in this recipe. Am I wrong?
Cottage cheese is pretty salty on its own, which is why I didn’t add any. But if you could add 1/4 teaspoon if you prefer
This sounds good but can it be made gluten free? Would the amounts of flour very?
While I haven’t tested this recipe with GF flour, I have very similar recipes that do really well with cup-for-cup gluten free flour and feel like this one would do great with it too.
This has quickly become my favorite muffin recipe! I tried 1 1/4 cups King Authur GF Flour – I wasn’t sure if there would be a difference since it wasnt whole wheat. The batter looked a little more dry than usual. I also rested the batter 15 min before baking. They are still good but a bit dry compared to original recipe. I believe using the regular amount of flour would make it just right.
Oh this is music to my ears! I’m so glad you enjoy them so much!!
Can I use regular flour instead of whole wheat?
I haven’t tested this swap yet, but if I were using all-purpose instead of whole wheat, I’d probably add 2-4 extra tablespoons of flour to help offset the extra moisture (since AP doesn’t soak up as much as whole wheat). Again, just an educated guess but let me know if you try it! 💛
I tried this recipe with AP flour (cup to cup sub) and subbed cacao powder instead of cocoa powder to absorb the extra liquid. Came out perfect!
Oh yay! I am SO glad you loved them!!
I’m loving this recipe! My first time to your site, but lower sodium, whole wheat, veg, and protein packed is everything now. I used olive oil, but should have stuck to avocado oil for the light flavor. The muffins are healthy without tasting like it.
So glad you found me and YES to that balance of flavor + function. Totally my goal with my recipes! Hope this is the first of many delish stops on TNN for you!
These are delicious!! So easy to make, and love another summer zucchini recipe. Between these and the beetroot ones, chocolate muffins are SET.
Ha! I was thinking as I hit publish on these “maybe you have ENOUGH chocolate +veggie muffins recipe now, Taesha.” But you know, its just such a surprise magic combo! So glad you loved them as much as we do, Cameron!
Can almond flour be substituted please?
Hi Jann! I haven’t tested this recipe with almond flour and don’t feel like it’d work great as a 1:1 swap. They are two very different flours that behave differently in baking. You might be able to try half almond flour and half whole wheat, but I wouldn’t do entirely almond flour
Super excited to make these because I happen to already have a zucchini AND cottage cheese in the fridge. I had to use white chocolate chips instead of regular but yummy and easy to make. I like to warm one up at night as a little dessert.
Oh a lady after my own heart, Lauren! I do the same! I also like to add a little whipped cream on top!
These look so good! Do you think ricotta cheese could be substituted? I think salt would be needed then as it isn’t as salty as cottage cheese.
I totally think ricotta would work with a little added salt! So glad you enjoyed them, Amy! Thanks for coming back and sharing💚
Just made these and they are delicious! We will be adding this to our regular meal prep rotation!
Yessss! Love this, Steph! We are pretty obsessed with these over here too.
These aren’t nearly as good as the black bean brownie muffins (my favorite chocolate muffin!), and I found this much cinnamon too overpowering for the chocolate, but the texture was great even with the cottage cheese and flax, so I’d love to try a non-chocolate version with that extra protein and fiber.
Thanks for the honest feedback, Peggy Ann. I do love those black bean muffins (so glad you love them too!). I personally love cinnamon + chocolate but absolutely get that not everyone will feel that way, so its a great idea to maybe add less cinnamon if it isn’t your favorite chocolate pairing. As for a non-chocolate version of these muffins, they were based off a carrot one that you might like. https://thenaturalnurturer.com/chocolate-chip-carrot-cottage-cheese-muffins/
Hi! Can’t wait to try these- but curious, do you need to grate the zucchini first if it’s all going to end up in the blender?
If you weigh it out to the mentioned amount, then you can just add it to the blender. But if you are measuring by cup, def grate it!
Curious if I can leave out the cocoa and if that would change the recipe too much?
The cocoa does absorb some moisture and I haven’t tested this version without it. However, I do have a similar recipe without cocoa powder that you might be able to swap the zucchini into https://thenaturalnurturer.com/chocolate-chip-carrot-cottage-cheese-muffins/
These are amazing. Breakfast and desert!!
Have you ever frozen them?
I have! They freeze great from my experience!
My 9 year old approved, will definitely be making these again!
Could I substitute Greek yogurt for the cottage cheese?
So glad you all loved them, Sarah! I haven’t tried this recipe myself with Greek yogurt for the cottage cheese but I know readers have done that with as similar muffin recipe with success. I would try to do a thicker, low-fat or full fat yogurt since some Greek yogurts are thinner or fat free has a lot of added water that could make these too wet
These are delicious and pretty easy to put together. I followed the recipe except did not grate the zucchini (just cut into chunks), omitted the cinnamon (personal preference) and added 1/2 cup chopped walnuts. I also think they could benefit from a tiny bit of salt, so next time I’ll try adding 1/4 teaspoon. So moist and yummy! I’ll definitely be making these again.
So glad you enjoyed them!!
Let me tell you mama – I love your muffin recipes so much that I finally invested in a zucchini presser because I always dread that part! And game changer haha! This one is for the ages – the best of all the muffins for sure! And that’s saying A LOT.
Woah! Now first…a zucchini press? How do I not know about this?? Also, regarding the muffins…YAY!!!!
Easy and delicious. My son said « eww » when he saw the zucchini and cottage cheese going in but loved the result!
I just put the batter in the fridge to bake fresh in the morning I used half BS and Coconut.
Have made these twice and my 3 boys loved them. Such a win for the lunchboxes using a veg they dont normally eat. Im wondering do you think they would work with Oat flour? My first recipe of yours but I’m off to check out more to try.
For anyone else trying them make sure to follow the instructions about cooking time and temp. I overcooked the first time a they were a bit dry, next time used thermometer and they were perfect 👌 😃
Oh I haven’t tried them with oat flour but I bet they would work!
Thank you so much. Another muffin recipe my picky kids both like, and that I can feel good about feeding them on the regular. We all love the taste, and I love the nutrients.
Oh yay! I am so glad to hear that, Caitlin!
I subbed peanut butter chips for chocolate chips and everyone loved them
Oh man….my family would go nuts over that sub! Must try!!!
I didn’t have any chocolate chips. Instead I had a white chocolate bar which I chopped up and put inside instead. Delicious!
Ooohhhhh I like how you think! I bet that was amazing!
These are delicious! I love the healthy additions. My picky son and his friend loved them!
Yay! I’m so glad they were such a hit over there!
We loved these! I used only 1/3 cup coconut sugar, but upped the chocolate chips (dark) to 1/2 cup. I added 1/2 cup chopped walnuts. I substituted full fat Greek yogurt for the cottage cheese because it’s what I had. It used a lot of zucchini which was a good thing as we have so much in the garden.
I’ll definitely make these again.
Thanks for the great nutritious recipe.
Yay!!! So glad you loved them so much!!
Another great one, still have zucchini from the garden. Made them using monk fruit instead of coconut sugar, and they are great.
Oh I love the monk fruit swap!!
Replaced the 1/3 C flax seeds 1:1 with 1/3 C whole wheat flour, came out moist and fluffy!
Oh yay! I love that swap, Kate! Thanks so much for coming back and sharing!
Wanted to use up my zucchini and cottage cheese before leaving town—now I may have to go buy zucchini and make these again. Freaking delicious! Left a couple for my parents—Dad texted requesting more! 😂
Yay!!! So glad you loved them so much, Chelsea! Thank you for coming back and sharing!!!
Really want to make these but dont have any cottage cheese on hand! What would be a good substitute so it the muffins still have good consistency?
Hi Sami! I haven’t tried this with something other than cottage cheese but readers have successfully subbed cottage cheese with Greek yogurt in similar muffin recipes. So I’d suggest that. I’d say stick with whole fat or low fat yogurt as there is too much water in fat free and that would add too much moisture to the recipe
