As a fair-skinned lady living in sunny San Diego…I know a thing or two about sunburns. And I have smartened up enough over the years to always have this Cooling After-Sun Spray on hand.
I am a big believer in using sunscreen (read What Ingredients to Avoid In Sunscreen + 4 Non-Toxic Sunscreens). The best kind of sunburn is the one that doesn’t happen. And UV rays aren’t exactly BFFs with our skin. However, sometimes even the most faithful of sunscreeners (AKA me!) can unexpectedly over do-it in the sun and be left feeling like everything that touches their skin is suddenly made of the fire of a thousand suns.
Yeah, I’ve had a few sunburns in my day (we won’t talk about my junior prom when I was too cool for school and went to the beach all. day. a few days before the dance and I totally ended up matching my red dress). And they are anything but cool. But sunburns happen. Luckily, Mother Nature is kind and awesome and has a few soothing tricks up her sleeve for when the sun leaves us with the complexion of a lobster.
This recipe for Cooling After-Sun Spray is sure to be a summer staple and something to keep handy for beach days gone longer than expected, poolside fun that just wouldn’t quit and impromptu adventures in the sun that leave you with a little extra color!
Part of the magic of this recipe is the natural plant power from 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils (I opt to use Young Living). Lavender oil and peppermint oil are wonderfully soothing and cooling. And when combined with everyone’s favorite natural sunburn treatment, aloe, this spray helps to sooth that ouchy skin!
This recipe has been formulated to be okay for use with children over the age of 3. But with that said, aways do your do you research when using essential oils with children! Peppermint is considered to be a hot oil, which is why there is very little peppermint essential oil in this recipe. However, if you prefer to skip it or replace it in this recipe, a wonderful substitute for peppermint would be frankincense essential oil!

Cooling After-Sun Spray
A total summer must-make! This easy and natural DIY spray cools and soothes skin that has seen a bit too much of the sun using the plant power of essential oils, aloe and witch hazel!
- Drop essential oils into a 2 oz glass spray bottle.
- After, add witch hazel, coconut oil, and aloe.
- Fill the remainder of the bottle with distilled water.
- Screw the lid on a shake up.
- Spray directly on skin, taking care to avoid eye area.
- Best when stored in fridge (plus the chilled spray feels awesome on sunburnt skin)
